documentary projects

Free Solo

Alexander Huber, most famous for his bold free ascents of big walls, tells his own tale about free soloing, fear, risk, death and motivation.

Timeline Productions asked me to create a score, which fits the dangerous nature of this sport. I chose the unique sound of the Hang Drum to be the main instruments – accompanied by various types of Rock and Beat–Driven music.

Expedition Antarctica

In January 2009 I scored a project for Timeline Production & Adidas about the famous climbing brothers Huber Buam in Antarctica, who managed a first ascent of the Holtanna West Face and the West Pillar of the Ulvetanna, one of the most difficult mountains in the world…
Matching the size of the enormous granite rock face they scaled, we developed an intense and massive soundtrack full of percussion and cinematic sound effects. Please check out the entire project on freecaster.tv in english and german.

Sonnenflug Trailer

Christian Schall is currently engaged in a film project called Sonnenflug (The Flight of the sun). In it, he is exploring the boundaries between documentary and feature film. Working with Christian is an adventurous ride and always a pleasure as he constantly looks to interweave unusual musical approaches into his work.

The trailer for this project, which is more of a short movie, includes large portions of black screen, typically a faux pas, but through his creative approach he has successfully brought the whole concept to reality. Admittedly, I had a difficult time coming up with an adequate musical score, but now finished: I am extremely pleased with the result.

Ueli Gegenschatz

In this project I worked with one of the most outstanding athletes in extreme sports: Ueli Gegenschatz – base jumper, skydiver, paraglider, mountaineer and lecturer.

Red Bull decided to do a documentary about this guy who sells insurances when he’s not jumping from a skyscraper! The film will be also screened onboard on Swiss Air. I did some additional scoring for this project.

Der Sammler

Der Sammler (The Collector) is a full length documentary about a collector who owns a lot of stuff, which most of us would consider as trash. But this kind, old-fashioned man lives in another world with a different opinion about the high-tech and high-speed capitalistic world in which we live. He’s currently building now a museum to convince the youth about the value of old things.

To support this unique character musically, I used a bassson as the main instrument, which I would describe as simply wacky – but in a positive way :)
